Lorenzo Nicoletta "The Real Music of the Early Renaissance" (a historical perspective) No Fee This class offers a historical perspective on music originating from the major musical centers in southern France and Italy between 1420 and 1460 A.D. Intended for musician and non-musician alike, the only prerequisite is a desire to hear and learn about music as it would have sounded in the early musical renaissance. In his time associated with the SCA, Lorenzo has heard music at many events, but very little that is truly "period" music or that has not been adapted to fit musical ideals and style established in the 18th and 19th centuries. Come and listen to what would have really been heard in the period and learn the historical significance behind several documented pieces. We will hear and discuss music originating from period manuscripts by composers Guillaume Dufay (c. 1397-1474), and Gilles Binchois (c. 1400-1600)--considered the greatest composers of the era by both modern and period musicologists. We will discuss the historical significance, the musical style, and attitude of the populace towards the music of this unique period in musical history. Mundanely, Terry Lee is completing a Masters degree in Music Composition with a special emphasis in Musicology at the University of North Texas in Denton. He completed a Bachelors degree in Music Composition at Brigham Young University in 2000. He has taken several graduate and undergraduate courses dealing specifically with medieval and renaissance music, and was the director/conductor of the BYU Renaissance Ensemble for 2 years. As a member of the Canton of Glaslyn, he has taught historical music classes at Kingdom Music and Dance (2004) and at the Ansteorran Argent Anniversary. He and his wife, Barbara, have been members of the SCA since 2000. |
